Despite its name, Mountain pepper (Litsea cubeba) is not a typical pepper spice. Mountain pepper grows wild in the mountainous regions of northern Vietnam, particularly along the border with China, including Lào Cai, Yên Bái, and Điện Biên. Its small, intensely fragrant fruits have traditionally been used as an aromatic spice in local mountain cuisines. Harvested from naturally growing trees, the fruits are steam-distilled to capture their distinctive citrus fragrance.
Its aroma is bright and refreshing, with a sharp, zesty lemon note complemented by fresh green herbal nuances. Although it shares the citrus brightness of lemongrass, mountain pepper essential oil has a lighter, sharper character with a sparkling freshness that sets it apart from other citrus-scented essential oils.
