Scent Story: Star Anise

Star anise (Scientific name: Illicium verum) is an evergreen tree belonging to the Illiciaceae family. It thrives in subtropical climates, primarily in Southeast China and the northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam, such as Lang Son and Quang Ninh province. The fruit is distinguished by its star-shaped flower-like form, typically featuring 5 to 8 points, which is why it is locally often referred to as the "anise flower." Generally, it takes about 5 to 6 years for a tree to begin yielding a harvest, with two main crops per year. Highly valued economically and sensitive to climate conditions, star anise is considered a signature crop of Vietnam’s northern highlands.

Star anise is an endemic plant with significant medicinal and economic value, widely used in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare. In traditional Vietnamese and Chinese medicine, it is regarded as a precious remedy with a characteristic "warm" nature and spicy flavor, often used to treat colds or soothe aches and pains. It is also an essential spice in many traditional Vietnamese dishes, including Phở, where it not only creates a signature aroma but also enhances nutritional value.

In the food industry, star anise essential oil is an essential ingredient for flavoring aperitifs (Pastis, Ouzo), confectionery, and seasonings, thanks to its naturally warm and sweet profile. In perfumery, it is prized by creators for adding brightness, elegance, and mystery to spicy and gourmand scents. With its high anethole content, it also serves as a perfect bridge, softening woody notes and enhancing the allure of floral scents in premium cosmetics.

Star anise has a sweet, spicy, and medicinal aroma, reminiscent of the natural sweetness of licorice with subtle woody undertones, evoking a sense of comfort and relaxation. Contrary to the common misconception that anise oil is harsh or overpowering, areme’s star anise essential oil is remarkably soft and rustic. It carries the gentle essence of natural herbs and a distinct sweetness thanks to its rich anethole content, creating an olfactory experience that is warm, ethereal, and well-rounded.

Vietnam is currently the world’s second-largest producer of star anise, following China. Among its provinces, Lang Son province is recognized as the "Star anise capital" of Vietnam, accounting for approximately 70% of the country’s total cultivation area. Located in the northeast mountains, Lang Son enjoys a temperate climate and fertile, well-drained soil—ideal conditions for the star anise tree to flourish as a staple local crop. The superior quality and value of Lang Son star anise were globally affirmed when its Geographical Indication (GI) was recognized and protected in the European Union under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) in 2020.

Compared to other regions, Lang Son star anise fruits are typically larger, with a deep reddish-brown color and exceptionally high essential oil content. The essential oil from this region boasts a trans-anethole concentration often exceeding 85%, ranking among the highest quality in Vietnam. Due to the unique terroir and climate, Lang Son’s oil is highly pure and toxin-free, offering a scent profile that is crisp, with a lingering sweet depth. These outstanding attributes make Lang Son star anise essential oil a preferred choice for premium products ranging from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to aromatherapy.

areme’s star anise essential oil is extracted from dried Lang Son star anise fruits using the steam distillation method, ensuring the highest purity while preserving the full integrity of the raw material’s natural compounds.
