We’re excited to share the story behind our Sarsi Leaf essential oil. We originally sought to create a unique Vietnam woody scent, as opposed to the unique and distinctive hinoki wood scent we produce in Japan. Our journey began with xá xị wood (Sassafras wood), known for its nostalgic scent reminiscent of the beloved soda drink in Vietnam. However, sustainability concerns and the complexity of extracting Sassafras oil led us to shift our focus to studying a local plant known as “quế đất - earth basil” or wrinkled marshweed (Limnophila rugosa (Roth) Merr) - a semi-aquatic herb treasured in Southern Vietnamese cuisine for its unique, aromatic flavor.
We chose this herb to extract essential oil from this herb and named it as many locals have long lovingly called - “Sarsi Leaf” essential oil—an homage to this special plant and, above all, to the hardworking farmers of Tây Ninh, who have dedicated themselves to cultivating sarsi leaf, making it a special part of Vietnamese culinary culture.
Sarsi leaf essential oil boasts a distinctive licorice-sweet aroma with caramel and vanilla undertones, reminiscent of root beer. Its scent is somewhat similar to Sassafras wood oil, which is highly valued (because of the wood itself) but restricted due to its potential misuse of the oil. This rare and unique fragrance of sarsi leaf sets it apart, making it an intriguing addition to any essential oil collection.
Sarsi leaf essential oil has been successfully extracted and introduced to the market for the first time by the research team at areme. Sarsi leaf essential oil is extracted from the whole plant of sarsi leaf - a special herb originated from Tay Ninh province, using steam distillation method.
For generations, Tay Ninh locals have discovered and incorporated the power of local herbs, including Sarsi Leaf, in their daily life cuisine. Sarsi leaf grown in Tay Ninh province is said to have a distinctive aroma and taste that make it an indispensable ingredient in the famous Bánh Tráng Trảng Bàng - boiled pork rice paper roll dish of Tay Ninh.
Sarsi leaves are easy to cultivate, require minimal care, and can be harvested year-round, providing substantial economic benefits to the local community. At areme, we work closely with local farmers, selecting organically grown sarsi leaves naturally cultivated in greenhouses without harmful pesticides. Sarsi leaf essential oil, extracted by steam distillation, captures the plant’s original delicate and mildly sweet fragrance.

Though scientific research on the health benefits of sarsi leaf essential oil is still limited, studies suggest that the oil, containing trans-anethole and methyl chavicol, exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties. Sarsi leaf has been long used as both culinary herb for local dishes and as a traditional medicinal herb to treat cold, cough and fever symptoms. Further research is needed to fully understand and leverage these potential benefits in health and wellness products. Some health benefits of sarsi leaf essential oil:
